Spring Hearts on Point Mystery Quilt

Share Your Story: 2010 New Year's Day Mystery Quilt Show and Tell

Why I chose my colors

I know Janet said warm and cool colors, but somehow I decided that I wanted purple and green. It's been a long cold winter and I must be looking forward to spring, so I talked myself into believing purple was a warm color. The colors don't contrast as well as they should, but I'm satisfied with purple and green. I tried numerous layouts until I got frustrated and decided to leave my last layout and walk away. The quilt must have called back to me, because when I looked back, I saw hearts on point. Cool

Why I chose either scrappy or orderly

I chose an orderly quilt even though I thought I wanted scrappy. When it came down to starting and not knowing what colors were going to go next to each other, I couldn't cut. I needed to have more control over it.

Tips and Tricks

  • Be careful to iron the seam allowances in opposite directions so the seams snuggle up against to each other.
  • Be care to iron each seam
  • Measure across the middle of the quilt to determine borders. It's really tempting to just sew it on and chop off the extra, but the borders get wavy that way.

What I might do differently if I use the pattern again

I'm gong to actually follow directions next time and use warm and cool colors. It's amazing how just changing the colors will change the whole look of the quilt.

Other thoughts about the mystery quilt

Since I wasn't following directions from the beginning, I think I should have used a softer lighter background fabric to help welcome in spring.

Janet Wickell, Quilting Guide, says:

Hi, you were right, purple is warm. Maybe it's the contrast between the specific purple and green that made it seem otherwise. Send me a photo and I'll add it to the page. quilting.guide@about.com
