Puppy Dog Doll Quilt - My first of many

What made you choose the pattern?

I wanted something small to make for a grandbaby, something easy.

I chose this pattern because all kids should have their own Doggie.

Did you finish the quilt? If not, why?

Yes, I did, and then sent it to my two sisters in Alabama for one's step granddaughter -- it ended up with one of their charge nurse's little ones.

What do you love (or hate) about the quilt?

I love the way the doggies came out but not the way the quilt looks on the different sides. they don't match in length on all 4 sides.

What would you do differently next time?

I have made a bigger pattern for me to make a regular size quilt out of. I will square up all blocks before putting together. I would start out with my pattern and then get all of my supplies together, after which I would then cut it out the pattern pieces from each of the different colors and then cut the blocks, making sure they are the correct size before using them.

What was the most difficult aspect of the project?

Squaring up the whole doll quilt. That is why it ended up a baby's blanky. When I got it done and held it up I could see it was not square. I was really disappointed in how it turned out but I didn't let that stop me from making more quilts. It relaxed me even though it didn't turn out the way I wanted it to.

Tips and Tricks

  • I learned to take my time and not second guess myself as I am working on a quilt. I also learned to square up each block before joining them to make the quilt top. I bought a square-up ruler from Jo-Ann Fabrics and the Double Wedding Ring Quilt I am making is turning out better than any of the lap quilts and other Quilts I have already made.
