Ohio Star Quilt

Share Your Story: Your First Quilt

From valentine44

What made you choose the pattern?

There wasn't a pattern, this was a simple Ohio Star block. It was a 12 inch finished block and I put twenty of them together. I picked fabrics that I had left over from other projects.

Did you finish the quilt? If not, why?

It has been a work in progress for approximately 10 years. Started quilting by hand, but that was taking to long. So now I am machine quilting a stippling pattern.

What do you love (or hate) about the quilt?

It is made of fabrics that are left over from projects I did for my grand children. I will be keeping it for myself. I do not make heirlooms -- simply things from the heart.

What would you do differently next time?

Nothing, as with most of my quilts; I look at a pattern but normally they evolve into something else.

What was the most difficult aspect of the project?

I found it hard to maintain the quarter inch seam. My machine quarter inch foot is not exact. I had to mark each seam with a quarter inch line, now I can eye ball it. Than having to spread it out on the floor to baste it. Boy, did my knees give me pain. Also, hand quilting with a hoop, it was so heavy. Now, I have found the quilt as you go method and it is so much better. I am not going to take it apart now, but will pick it up and quilt on every so often. Someday it will be on my bed.

Tips and Tricks

  • I learned how important it is to measure and sew a straight line. I learned to hand quilt and machine quilt. Haven't tried an applique yet, but I think it will be next.
