Nine Patch for the Kids

Share Your Story: Your First Quilt

From Margaret

What made you choose the pattern?

A nine patch - my Mother chose it. Simple for kids

Did you finish the quilt? If not, why?

My brother and I (I was in the 5th grade) sewed the blocks together by hand. I often wonder if Mother resewed them when we were at school

What do you love (or hate) about the quilt?

As I remember it was ugly as sin but we had a sense of accomplishment. Worn out long ago.

What would you do differently next time?

It was a fun experience for two kids that were bored during a long winter with no where to go. As I remember we didn't have a car. When it was finished, Mother quilted it, and we used it for years.

What was the most difficult aspect of the project?

Probably keeping my needle threaded and keeping the seams straight. I remember biting my tongue as I learned how to use a thimble and thread a needle. Mother was very patient and showed us how to do it. I don't remember if she made us take out seams we did wrong or not - probably. She was a great quilt maker and quilter.

Tips and Tricks

  • You can be having fun and accomplish and learn at the same time. I don't have a picture, but it was green and white.
  • We spent hours on that quilt and the winter finally ended.
  • I taught my 3 year old granddaughter how to string buttons with a needle and thread a few weeks ago. She thought she had accomplished a great feat.
