Assemble the Hearts 'n Rags Rag Quilt
Before you begin, sandwich the like-units, patches wrong sides together:
- 12 heart blocks with their backings
- 8 large scale floral squares with their backing
- 9 border print squares with their backing
- 12 small scale bars with their backing
If you are using batting, slip a piece between each matched pair.
Assemble the Rag Quilt
Use a 1/2" seam allowance throughout.
- Place backing sides together and sew two bar stacks together along their 8-1/2" edge to create a square block. Repeat, making a total of 12 blocks from bar pairs.
- Arrange all blocks into seven rows as shown (refer back to the quilt photo on page 1 if necessary).
- Join the components in each row, placing backing sides together and taking care to align edges carefully. Pin if necessary and remove pins as you approach them.
- Join two rows with straight pins, separating seam allowances at their centers and spreading them out. Sew the rows together.
- Continue joining the rows. You might find it less bulky to sew three rows together and then sew the remaining four rows together. Finish by joining the two row units you just created.
- Sew a seam along each side of the quilt.
- Make perpendicular clips into each seam, placing them about 1/4" apart and taking care not to clip into seam lines. Also avoid clipping out chunks of seam allowances at seam intersections.
- Wash and dry the quilt. Inspect seams to make sure they are intact. If you discover areas where scissors clipped a bit too far, repair the seam. Rewash and dry if necessary to fluff the ragged seams a bit more.
