Free Rag Quilt Pattern - Rags 'n Hearts Rag Quilt
The photo illustrates the Hearts 'n Rags rag quilt after one washing and drying. I'll wash it again to create a more ragged look in the seams. I hope you can see the lines -- it's raining and I couldn't take it outside for better color. Hearts 'n Rags is a rag quilt pattern made from a combination of squares and bars (the bars are pieced to form squares). Ragged edge hearts are sewn to twelve of the square blocks.
I used a border print for some of the squares in my quilt, but you can use any directional fabric for the same basic look.
Joined bars separate the border print squares. I used the same fabric for both bars in a pair, but used bars instead of squares so that I would have extra texture from the ragged seam that separates them.
Ragged edge hearts are sewn to twelve mottled blue squares; large-print floral squares separate the heart blocks.
Change the theme in any way you like. The layout will work with any types of fabric. Try plaids in some of the positions, and place plaid hearts against a tone-on-tone. Juvenile fabrics are another option, but honestly, any theme will work.

Quilting Fabrics
Yardage assumes you will use the same fabric on the front and back of blocks. I did not place a batting layer in my quilt; you'll need 2-3/8 extra yards for batting; I recommend flannel. You'll also need extra yardage if fabrics do not have at least 43" of usable width.
Mottled blue for heart backgrounds: 1-1/3 yards
- Cut (24) 8-1/2" x 8-1/2" squares from (5) 8-1/2" wide strips cut from selvage to selvage (12 extra from optional batting)
Large scale floral for squares sewn between heart blocks: 1-1/8 yards
- Cut (16) 8-1/2" x 8-1/2" squares from (4) 8-1/2" wide strips cut from selvage to selvage (8 extra from optional batting)
Border stripe or directional fabric: 1-1/8 yards
- Cut (18) 8-1/2" x 8-1/2" squares from (4) 8-1/2" wide strips cut from selvage to selvage (9 extra from optional batting)
Small scale print for bars: 7/8 yard
- Cut (24) 4-3/4" x 8-1/2" bars from (3) 8-1/2" wide strips cut from selvage to selvage (12 extra from optional batting)
Small scale print for hearts: 1/4 yard
