Which Way Do We Go? Quilt with Winged Square Blocks, Flying Geese and a Bright Border Print

© Janet Wickell
I designed this strippy set wallhanging for a bright, Alexander Henry border print fabric. The quilt has three wide border sections along its top, bottom and sides. Two narrower portions of the border print separate the vertical columns of Winged Square blocks.

If you don't have a border print, choose another fabric for the columns and borders.

Quilt Size: 35-1/2" x 31-1/2"; size will vary if your borders are different widths.

Fabrics / Materials

  • Medium-light for block setting components: 3/4 yard

  • Twelve dark fabrics for Winged Squares: at least 10" square each (extra for Flying Geese)

  • Light for Flying Geese and Winged Square Background: 3/4 yard

  • Dark Flying Geese: Random scraps

  • Border Print: 1-1/8 yard; use additional fabric if outer stripes are wider than 5-1/2" and inner strips are wider than 4-1/2".

  • Backing: 1 yard

  • Low loft batting: approximately 41" x 37"

  • Binding: 150 running inches

Quilt Cutting Chart

Medium-Light Setting Components

  • Six 2-1/2" squares for block centers
  • Three 4-1/8" squares for side triangles
  • Two 7" squares for setting triangles
  • Six 3-3/4" squares for corner triangles

Half-Square Triangle Units for Winged Squares

  • Each dark fabric: six 1-7/8" squares
  • Light fabric: seventy-two 1-7/8" squares

Scrappy Flying Geese

Numbers will vary a bit if you choose wider or narrower borders prints.

  • Seventy 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" rectangles cut from a scrappy assortment of dark fabrics

  • One hundred forty 1-1/2" squares of same light fabric used for half-square triangle units.

Border Print

Your print widths may vary.

  • Inner vertical strippy set sashing, (2) 4-1/2" x at least 18"

  • Outer vertical border, (2) 5-1/2" x at least 18"

  • Outer horizontal border, (2) 5-1/2" x at least 33"

Add to border lengths to compensate for wider borders.
