Five Patch Chain Quilt Block Cutting Instructions

Make 32 Blocks

Black print for four patch units: (16) 2-1/2" x selvage width strips

Neutral print for four patch units and center row: (18) 2-1/2" x selvage width strips

Deep burgundy for bars: (4) 4-1/2" x selvage width strips; cut (64) 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" bars from the strips

Deep burgundy for strip pieced center rows (rather than sewing individual pieces together): (4) 4-1/2" x selvage width strips

  1. Sew the black print strips and neutral print strips together in pairs as shown in the block pattern. Cut a total of (256) 2-1/2" segments from the strip sets and make 128 four patch units.

  2. Sew a 4-1/2" x selvage width burgundy strip lengthwise to opposite sides of a 2-1/2" x selvage width neutral strip. Press seam allowances towards the burgundy strips. Repeat to make another strip set. Square up one end of each strip set and cut (32) 2-1/2" segments to form ready-made center rows.

  3. Complete block as shown in the pattern.
