Make Components for the Single Chain and Knot Quilt Blocks

Make one strip set at a time and assemble one quilt block before cutting all of the fabric for your quilt.

The Christmas Star quilt blocks are made with the four different strip pieced units illustrated on this page. Take care to cut strips carefully, use a 1/4" seam allowance to sew them together and press -- don't iron.

Top Left: Light/Green/Light Units

Cut (8) 2-1/2" x selvage width strips of light fabric.
Cut (16) 2-1/2" x selvage width strips of green fabric.

  1. Sew a light strip lengthwise to each side of a green strip as shown. Press seam allowances towards the green strip.

  2. Square up one end of the strip set and cut as many 2-1/2" segments from it as possible (likely 16). Repeat to assemble seven more identical strip sets. Cut a total of (124) 2-1/2" segments.

Top Right: Gold/Purple/Gold Units

Cut (8) 2-1/2" x selvage width strips of deep gold fabric.
Cut (4) 2-1/2" x selvage width strips of purple fabric.

  1. Sew a gold strip lengthwise to each side of a purple strip as shown. Press seam allowances towards the gold strips.

  2. Square up one end of the strip set and cut as many 2-1/2" segments from it as possible. Repeat to assemble three more identical strip sets. Cut a total of (62) 2-1/2" segments.

Bottom Left: Purple/Gold/Purple Units

Cut (4) 2-1/2" x selvage width strips of purple fabric.
Cut (2) 2-1/2" x selvage width strips of gold fabric.

  1. Sew a purple strip lengthwise to each side of a gold strip as shown. Press seam allowances towards the gold strip.

  2. Square up one end of the strip set and cut as many 2-1/2" segments from it as possible. Repeat to assemble one more identical strip set. Cut a total of (31) 2-1/2" segments.

Bottom Right: Purple/Light Units

Cut (9) 1-1/2" x selvage width strips of purple fabric.
Cut (9) 1-1/2" x selvage width strips of light fabric.

  1. Sew a light strip lengthwise to a purple strip. Press seam allowance towards the purple strip.

  2. Square up one end of the strip set and cut as many 1-1/2" segments from it as possible (likely 28).

  3. Make 8 more identical strip sets and cut a total of (248) 1-1/2" segments.
