Arrange the Vintage Chain Blocks On-Point in Diagonal Rows

© Janet Wickell
  1. Sew the quilt blocks and setting triangles into diagonal rows as shown. Press seam allowances towards the setting triangles and Five-Patch Chain blocks.

Notice that five Chain and Knot blocks are placed on point across the quilt, five-wide. Four Five-Patch Chain blocks are nestled between rows of the Chain and Knots.

  2. Sew the diagonal rows together, matching seams carefully from row to row.

  3. Center and sew a corner triangle to each corner of the quilt. Press the quilt.

  4. Add straight borders to the quilt. Make the inner border from remaining 2-1/2" wide brown strips. Make the outer border from 4-1/2" wide black/geometric strips. Use my straight border instructions to construct the borders and sew them to the quilt.

If you are a new quilter, don't be tempted to make borders that match the measurements along the sides of your quilt. Borders offer an excellent opportunity to correct inconsistencies, leaving you with a quilt that's in-square along its edges. So be sure to read the instructions if this is new to you.

  5. Sandwich the quilt with batting and backing. Quilt by hand or machine. Trim and square-up excess edges and sew binding strips around the quilt edges.
