Black Geometric / Green-White Four Patch Units

  1. Sew a black-geometric 1-1/2" x 42" strip lengthwise to a white-green strip of the same size. Press seam allowance towards black strip. Square up one end of the strip set and cut as many 1-1/2" segments from it as possible (27-28).

  2. Assemble additional identical strip sets; one from the 10" long strips. Cut 60 segments.

  3. Assemble 30 four-patch units from the strip sets, arranging like colors diagonally.

Strip Sets with Five Squares

Sew the first two strips together as you normally would. Start sewing strip three at the end where the seam that attached strips one and two ended. Begin sewing strip four where the seam between strips two and three ended. Do the same for the last strip. The back-and-forth motion helps to avoid distortion in the set.

  1. Sew five 2-1/2" x 42" strips together lengthwise in this order: (refer to illustration, block rows 2 and 4)

  2. Press seam allowances towards the center of the strip.

  3. Square up one end of the strip set and cut 2-1/2" long segments from it. Make additional identical strips sets until you have cut a total of 60 segments.

Assemble Blocks

  1. Refer to the block above and the drawing on page 2. Arrange segments into rows as shown, page 2 lower left. Sew into five rows. Sew rows together. Press. The quilt block should measure 10-1/2" x 10-1/2".

  2. Make a total of thirty Chain and Knot quilt blocks. Set aside.
