Miniature Quilt

Finished Size: 22" Square

Walk Around the Block is an easy miniature medallion quilt. Its pictorial center medallion is framed by a dark narrow border and large triangles. Strip pieced nine-patch and bar blocks, plus very dark triangles, complete the center section of the quilt.

I chose a house pictorial for my center block, but this quilt would work with any theme you'd like to use.

Fabrics

Pictorial for center, 5-1/2" square

Very dark fabric for narrow borders and dark portion of triangle squares: 1/4 yard

Medium print for triangle squares and lighter borders, 1/4 yard

Light for strip pieced blocks, 1/8 yard

Medium dark 1 for strip pieced nine patch, 1/8 yard

Medium dark 2 for bar blocks, 1/8 yard

Backing, 3/4 yard

Batting, 26" square

Binding, 98" running

Cutting

Dark Fabric

Vertical frame, center medallion, cut 2: 1" x 5-1/2"
Horizontal frame, center medallion, cut 2: 1" x 6-1/2"
For triangle squares, cut 8: 2-3/8" squares
Reserve remaining fabric for border

Medium Print

Rectangles, cut 2: 2" x 3-1/2"
Squares, cut 8: 2-3/8" squares
Reserve remaining fabric for borders

Light Fabric

Strips, cut 2: 1" x 33"
Strip, cut 3: 1" x 17"

Medium Dark 1

Sew the Center Medallion for the Miniature Quilt

Miniature Quilt Center Medallion

Sew the 1" x 5-1/2" dark strips to the top and bottom of the center medallion. Press seam allowances towards the medallion.
Sew the 1" x 6" dark strip to the sides of the medallion unit. Press seam allowances towards the medallion.

Make the Triangle Square Units

Make 16 half-square triangle units from the medium and dark 2-3/8" squares. Use the easy sandwich method to construct the units. When constructed each unit should measure 2" square.

Make Nine Patch Quilt Blocks for the Miniature Quilt

Miniature Nine Patch Blocks

Gather the 1" x 33" light and medium dark 1 strips. Sew the strips together lengthwise, with the darker strip in the middle. Press seam allowances towards the dark strip.
Use your rotary cutting equipment to square-up one end of the strip set, then cut thirty-two 1" segments from the set.
Gather one 1" x 17" light strip and two 1" x 17" medium dark 1 strips. Sew lengthwise to create a second strip set, placing the light strip in the middle. Press seam allowances towards the dark strips.

Square up one end of the strip set and cut sixteen 1" segments from it.
Assemble the nine patch blocks by sewing a Step 2 segment to each side of a Step 4 segment. Press seam allowances towards the center unit.
Repeat to make a total of sixteen nine patch blocks.

Seam Allowance Option

If you don't like the bulk of the 1/4" seam allowances, trim them back to about 3/16" before you cut units from strip sets.

Assemble the Miniature Medallion Quilt

Arrange the Quilt Components

Gather all pieces for the quilt except borders. Arrange in groups as shown in the illustration above.
Sew units within each group together in rows. Press seams in adjoining rows in opposite directions then sew rows together.
Sew the vertical columns to the left and right sides of the center medallion.
Sew the top and bottom horizontal sections to the quilt. Press.

Sew Quilt Borders

Refer to Sewing Straight Borders to cut and sew borders to the quilt.

Border Widths:

Inner Medium: cut 1-1/2" wide strips
Center Dark: cut 1-1/4" wide strips
Outer Medium: cut 2-1/2" wide strips

Finishing the Quilt

Sandwich the top with batting and backing and quilt. Remove excess batting and backing, squaring up corners if necessary. Bind the quilt and add a hanging sleeve if desired.
