Rocky Glen Quilt Pattern
The Rocky Glenn quilt is made from a single component, the half-square triangle unit -- lots of half-square triangle units in two sizes.Block Size: 12" square
Quilt Size: 60" square
My favorite triangle square assembly technique is the sandwich method, where two squares are placed right sides together and seams are sewn 1/4" from each side of the diagonal center.
There are 700 small half-square triangles in this quilt, and making them requires 350 sandwiched pairs. Would I still use that method? Probably, but maybe you'd prefer to assemble them another way.
A product called Thangles makes it easy to sew the units onto long strips without creating the strips yourself. You'll need enough strips to make:
- 700 half-square triangle units that finish at 1-1/2" square
- 100 half-square triangle units that finish at 4-1/2" square
Create Your Own Grid
You can make your own (slightly different) long grid -- just follow my instructions and use a 2-3/8" grid for the small triangle squares and a 5-3/8" grid for larger units.I nearly always make my triangle squares a little larger than necessary, and then trim them back with a square ruler after assembly to make sure they start out at the exact size required. If you do the same, be sure to place the ruler's diagonal line on the seam, and trim the unit so that each side of it occupies exactly 1/2 of the space.
If you assemble the units from sandwiches or make a grid, use a scant 1/4" seam allowance to avoid too-small units.
