Quilt Sashing and Cornerstones

  1. Cut two 9-1/2" wide strips of red sashing fabric from selvage to selvage.

  2. Square up one end of a strip and cut (16) 2-1/2" segments from it. Repeat, cutting (16) more from the remaining strip.

  3. Cut a 9-1/2" x 21" strip from sashing fabric. Square up one end and cut (8) 2-1/2" segments from it.

  4. You should have (40) sashing strips that measure 2-1/2" x 9-1/2".

  5. Cut a 2-1/2" wide strip of cornerstone fabric from the remaining "tail" of the blue strip used to cut the single 10-1/2" square. Square up one end of the strip and cut 2-1/2" squares from it. You'll need 16 in all -- a second strip should do it.

Assemble Horizontal Sashing

  1. Sew a horizontal sashing row. Use five sashing strips and place cornerstones between them.

  2. Sew pieces in the row together, matching fabric carefully. Press seam allowances towards the red sashing.

  3. Repeat to make three more horizontal sashing rows.

Sew Sashing Between Blocks

  1. Arrange blocks in five rows, flip-flopping adjacent blocks as shown.

  2. Sew sashing strips between blocks (sashing strips are not sewn to row ends). Press seam allowances towards the sashing.

  3. Sew rows of blocks together from top to bottom, placing horizontal sashing rows between them and matching seam intersections carefully. Press.

Sew Borders and Finish the Quilt

  1. Sew an inner border to the quilt using 2-1/2" wide strips of the sashing fabric. Use 5" wide strips to sew the outer border.

If you are a new quilter, don't be tempted to make borders that match the measurements along the sides of your quilt, because they are likely out of square. Be sure to read the instructions first.

  2. Mark for quilting if necessary. Sandwich the quilt with batting and backing. Quilt by hand or machine. Trim and square-up excess edges and sew binding strips around the quilt edges.
