Cut the Sashing

Refer to the layout drawing on Page 1 if necessary. Press carefully as you work so that all components fit together during assembly.

  1. Cut two 12-1/2" wide selvage to selvage strips from your black fabric, then cut twenty-five 2-1/2" x 12-1/2" bars from the strips.

  2. Cut six 2-1/2" wide selvage to selvage strips from your black fabric and set aside.

Arrange the Lantern Blocks into Rows

  1. Arrange the blocks into five rows, each row containing six lantern blocks. If you're using scrappy lanterns, rearrange the blocks until you are satisfied with the layout.

  2. Place a 2-1/2" x 12-1/2" black sashing strip vertically between blocks, five per row.

  3. Sew the blocks and sashing in each row together. Press seams in either direction.

  4. Use the reserved 2-1/2" black strips to construct four long sashing strips, each 58-1/2" long. Sew a sashing strip to the bottom of the top four rows. Press seam allowances towards the sashing.

Before matching long sashing to rows, it's a good idea to mark the sashing edges to show where blocks should align with the strip, so that all blocks are in vertical alignment when the rows are sewn together. Ease block ends into position to meet match points if necessary.

  5. Sew the rows together. Press seam allowances towards the sashing.

Adding Borders to the Quilt

  1. Follow my instructions for butted borders to measure the quilt and add the inner border. Use 2-1/2" wide black stripsto construct the inner border.

  2. Cut 6-1/2" x 42" strips of your outer border fabric and add to the quilt using the same butted border method.

  3. Mark for quilting if necessary. Sandwich the quilt top with batting and backing and quilt.

  4. Make doublefold binding strips and sew them to your quilt.
