Assemble the Sashing & Cornerstones and Finish the Quilt
One of My Free Quilt Patterns - Midnight Blues Quilt Pattern

Sew sashing vertically between quilt blocks and construct horizontal rows from sashing and cornerstones.

Janet Wickell
  1. Cut (3) 9-1/2" wide strips of splotchy teal fabric from selvage to selvage. Square up one end of each strip. Cut a total of (47) 2-1/2" segments from the strips.

  2. Cut (2) 2-1/2" wide strips of dark blue fabric from selvage to selvage. Square up one end of each strip. Cut a total of (30) 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" squares.

  3. Assemble a sashing/cornerstone unit as illustrated with (5) 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" dark squares and (4) 2-1/2" x 9-1/2" bars. Begin and end the unit with a blue cornerstone. Press seam allowances towards the long bars.

  4. Make five more identical units.

  5. Arrange blocks into five rows, each with four blocks. Connect the blocks in a row by sewing sashing bars between them. Sew a sashing bar at the beginning and end of the row, too. Press seam allowances towards the sashing.

  6. Assemble all five rows in the same manner.

  7. Connect the rows by sewing a horizontal sashing/cornerstone strip between them, butting seams carefully. Finish by sewing a sashing/cornerstone strip to the top of the quilt and to the bottom.

Add the Borders & Finish the Quilt

  1. Use 2-1/2" wide strips of yellow/gold fabric to make the inner borders. Beginners - don't be tempted to measure your quilt along its outer edges, because it is likely skewed a bit. Borders are an opportunity to square up the quilt before the finishing steps. (Border Instructions)

  2. Using 4-1/2" wide strips of medium blue fabric, sew the outer borders to the quilt.

  3. Mark the top for quilting if necessary. Sandwich with batting and backing and quilt. Finish by applying the binding.
