Assemble the Quilt Top

  1. Cut two 9-3/8" x 9-3/8" squares from the pale green print. Cut each square in half once diagonally to make four corner triangles.

  2. Cut two 18-1/4" x 18-1/4" squares from the pale green print. Cut each square in half twice diagonally to make eight setting triangles.

  3. Sew the quilt blocks and setting triangles into diagonal rows as shown. Press seam allowances towards the setting triangles and Eight Hands Around blocks.

  4. Sew the diagonal rows together, matching seams carefully from row to row.

  5. Center and sew a corner triangle to each corner of the quilt. Press the quilt.

  6. Add straight borders to the quilt. Make the inner border from remaining 2-1/2" wide darkest blue strips. Make the outer border from 7-1/2" wide blue print strips. Use my straight border instructions to construct the borders and sew them to the quilt.

If you are a new quilter, don't be tempted to make borders that match the measurements along the sides of your quilt. Borders offer an excellent opportunity to correct inconsistencies, leaving you with a quilt that's in-square along its edges. So be sure to read the instructions if this is new to you.

  7. Mark for quilting if necessary. Sandwich the quilt with batting and backing. Quilt by hand or machine. Trim and square-up excess edges and sew binding strips around the quilt edges.
