Calico Puzzle Blocks
This block a variation of the traditional Calico Puzzle -- I turned the triangles around so they would interact with the quilt's other components. If you prefer the true Calico Puzzle, all you have to do is flip the dark triangles when you sew rows together (see page 5 for the traditional layout). Preview the differences before you assemble the blocks.
Cutting Instructions
- Dark for (HST) units, (3) 4-7/8" x selvage width strips; cut (24) 4-7/8" x 4-7/8" squares from the strips
- Medium for (HST) units, (3) 4-7/8" x selvage width strips; cut (24) 4-7/8" x 4-7/8" squares from the strips
- Medium for block center, (1) 4-1/2" x selvage width strip and (1) 4-1/2" x 14" strip; cut (12) 4-1/2" x 4-1/2" squares from strips
- Medium-light for remaining squares, (5) 4-1/2" x selvage width strip and (1) 4-1/2" x 14" strip; cut (48) 4-1/2" x 4-1/2" squares from strips
Assemble the Calico Puzzle Quilt Blocks
- Pair a dark 4-7/8" square with a medium 4-7/8" square. Use the easy sandwich method to combine the two, resulting in (2) HST units. When complete, each unit should measure 4-1/2" x 4-1/2".
- Pair all remaining 4-7/8" dark and medium squares to make a total of (48) HST units.
- Arrange 4 HST units, four medium-light squares and one medium square into three rows as illustrated. Sew components of each row together. Press seam allowances towards the medium-light squares.
- Join the rows. Press. The quilt block should measure 12-1/2" x 12-1/2".
- Repeat to make a total of 12 Calico Puzzle quilt blocks.
