Make the Eccentric Star Quilt Blocks
Half square triangle units (HSTs) are used to assemble the Eccentric Star block. Use the easy sandwich method to construct them. Alter cutting instructions if you choose another method.
Cutting:
All required patches are listed, but begin by cutting only enough fabric to make a sample block.
StS refers to strips cut from selvage to selvage. You'll need extra strips if your fabrics do not have a usable width of at least 42".
Purple: cut (2) 4-1/2" wide strips from StS; cut (18) 4-1/2" x 4-1/2" squares from the strips.
White with gray: cut (9) 4-7/8" wide strips from StS; cut (72) 4-7/8" x 4-7/8" squares from the strips.
Swirled greens/purple: cut (9) 4-7/8" wide strips from StS; cut (72) 4-7/8" x 4-7/8" squares from the strips. (illustrated above as solid green)
- Use the easy sandwich method to sew a 4-7/8" x 4-7/8" white square to a green swirled square of the same size. The result will be two HSTs that measure 4-1/2" x 4-1/2".
- Repeat to combine all 4-7/8" x 4-7/8" squares, making a total of (144) identical HSTs.
- Arrange (8) HSTs and (1) purple square into three rows as shown. Sew components of each row together.
- Press seam allowances in center row towards the center square. Press seam allowances in top and bottom row away from the center unit.
- Sew the rows together, butting seams for a perfect match.
- Press the quilt block. It should measure 12-1/2" x 12-1/2".
