Make the Quarter Square Triangle Alternate Blocks
Quilt Patterns

Make quarter square triangle units to use as alternate blocks for the Harvest Stars quilt pattern.

Janet Wickell
Although you can assemble quarter square triangle units from individual triangles, it's quicker to make them in the same way you made the smaller red/neutral units for star tips.

Cutting Instructions

Brown fabric: cut (3) 13-1/4" wide strips from selvage to selvage; cut (9) 13-1/2" x 13-1/2" squares from the strips

Black fabric: cut (3) 13-1/4" wide strips from selvage to selvage; cut (9) 13-1/2" x 13-1/2" squares from the strips

  1. Pair a brown square with a black square. Use the easy sandwich method to make two half square triangle units from the pair. When complete, each unit should measure 12-7/8" x 12-7/8".

  2. Pair all remaining brown and black squares to make a total of 18 identical units.

  3. Pair two half square triangle units to make two quarter square triangle units, just as you did for red/neutral star tips. Be sure that contrasting fabrics face each other when units are aligned for sewing. Each completed unit should measure 12-1/2" x 12-1/2".

  4. Pair the remaining brown/black half square triangle units to make 18 quarter square units. One unit will not be used (it can be cut down for use in another project; you could also use your leftover fabrics to add borders to it and make a throw pillow cover to coordinate with your quilt.)
