Make Easy Pillowcases in Minutes Once You Understand the Technique
Here's an easy pillowcase pattern you can use to make custom pillowcases that coordinate with your quilts or match any other theme. Once you understand the technique you can sew these pillowcases in no time at all.
Use Easy French Seams to Sew the Pillowcase
French seams conceal raw edges of seam allowances along the side and bottom edges inside the pillowcase.
The good news... French seams are very easy to sew.
The pillowcase's cuff is sewn using a different technique that serves the same seam-hiding purpose as French Seams.
Customize the Size of Your Pillowcase
The pillowcase pattern explains how to make standard size cases, but it's easy to alter the dimensions (and looks) to suit your needs.
- My finished accent strip is narrow -- you might prefer a wider accent.
- Alter the length and/or depth of fabric panels to make a larger or smaller pillowcase.
Fabrics You'll Need for One Standard Pillowcase
All fabrics are cut across the fabric's crosswise grain -- from selvage to selvage. Use fabrics that are 42" - 44" wide. Slight differences in widths of individual fabrics aren't a problem because you'll trim everything to match later.
Each pillowcase has three parts: a body, an accent strip, and a cuff. Choose a fabric for each.
See How to Cut Fabric Strips if the technique is new to you. Rotary cutting is helpful, but not required.
Pillowcase body:
- (1) 28" wide strip cut from selvage to selvage
Pillowcase cuff:
- (1) 10" wide strip cut from selvage to selvage
Pillowcase accent:
- 1-1/2" wide strip cut from selvage to selvage\
