Arrange the Darting Birds Blocks, setting squares and setting triangles into diagonal rows.

Darting Birds Quilt Pattern Layout

  1. Arrange the Darting Birds quilt blocks into diagonal rows as shown with setting squares and large setting triangles.

  2. Sew components of each row together. Press seam allowances away from Darting Birds blocks.

  3. Sew rows together, butting seams for a good match.

  4. Center and sew a corner triangle to each corner.

  5. Press.

Add Borders to the Darting Birds Quilt

Use my straight border instructions to measure and sew borders, one at a time. If you are a beginner, don't be tempted to measure the length along quilt sides -- they will be skewed. This is your opportunity to bring the quilt into square before finishing it.

  • Sew the inner border from 2" wide navy blue strips.
  • Sew the outer border from 3-1/2" wide background strips.

Finish the Quilt

Mark for quilting if necessary. Sandwich the quilt with batting and backing. Quilt by hand or machine. Trim and square-up excess edges and sew binding strips around the quilt edges.
