Colene's Penny Pincher Bricks & Cobblestones Quilt
Here's a lively quilt block swap from Forum Hostess Colene, aka Robicole2. Scrap quilt fans always like Colene's Penny Pincher swaps, because they're designed to help use up those small pieces of fabric in your stash.
Quilt Fabrics
Choose bright geometrics, dots, stripes, tone on tones and small prints. The block examples on page 3 and page 4 are made with a tone-on-tone for either fabric #1 or fabric #2, and a print for the other fabric in the block. Refer to the quilt block diagrams on page 2 for assembly schematics. One of our community members wrote to suggest using noodles for this quilt block. What a great idea -- thank you Sally!
Swap Guidelines
If you plan to join the swap, read the guidelines posted in the Penny Pincher Swap Discussion before you make quilt blocks, because a few other fabric choices are acceptable. Forum members always talk about their blocks as they make them, and you'll find that those discussions will be loads of help when you begin to sew.
Cobblestone Quilt Blocks
Each cobblestone is 6 1/2" X 6 1/2" unfinished (before sewing to neighbors)
- Fabric 1: cut one 2-1/2" X 2-1/2" square
- Fabric 2: cut two 2-1/2" X 2-1/2" square,
- and cut two 2-1/2" X 6-1/2" rectangles
Brick Quilt Blocks
Each cobblestone is 6-1/2" X 12-1/2" unfinished (before sewing to neighbors)
- Fabric 1: cut one 2-1/2" X 8-1/2" rectangle
- Fabric 2: cut two 2-1/2" X 2-1/2" squares
- and cut two 2-1/2" X 12-1/2" rectangles
Remember to use two different fabrics per block if you want to make a quilt like the one in the photo above. For example, if you choose a tone-on-tone for Fabric 1, choose a bright print for Fabric 2.
