Make Quarter-Square Triangle Units
The colorful portions of the Clown quilt block are made from quarter-square triangle units.
- Draw a diagonal line from one corner to the opposite corner on the reverse side of each 4-1/4" background square.
- Use the sandwich method to pair each background square with a purple, aqua or rose square of the same size to make half-square triangle units that are used as parents for your quarter-square triangle units. Completed units should measure 3-7/8" square.
- Draw a diagonal line on the reverse side of half the units in each color combination.
- Sew two identical parent units together using the same technique. When aligned for sewing, the dark fabric will face the background fabric on the opposite unit. complete quarter-square triangle instructions
- When cut apart and pressed, the two parent units will provide two quarter-square triangle units that measure 3-1/2" square.
- Repeat to make 64 background/purple units, 64 aqua/background units, and 48 rose/background units.
Assemble the Quilt Blocks
- Arrange your quarter-square triangle units and 3-1/2" background squares into five rows as shown; each row has five units.

- Sew the rows together. Press new seam allowances towards the center row.
- Your block should measure 15-1/2" square. Repeat to make 15 more quilt blocks.
