Make Quarter-Square Triangle Units

The colorful portions of the Clown quilt block are made from quarter-square triangle units.

  1. Draw a diagonal line from one corner to the opposite corner on the reverse side of each 4-1/4" background square.

  2. Use the sandwich method to pair each background square with a purple, aqua or rose square of the same size to make half-square triangle units that are used as parents for your quarter-square triangle units. Completed units should measure 3-7/8" square.

  3. Draw a diagonal line on the reverse side of half the units in each color combination.

  4. Sew two identical parent units together using the same technique. When aligned for sewing, the dark fabric will face the background fabric on the opposite unit. complete quarter-square triangle instructions

  5. When cut apart and pressed, the two parent units will provide two quarter-square triangle units that measure 3-1/2" square.

  6. Repeat to make 64 background/purple units, 64 aqua/background units, and 48 rose/background units.

Assemble the Quilt Blocks

  1. Arrange your quarter-square triangle units and 3-1/2" background squares into five rows as shown; each row has five units.

  2. Sew the components of each row together. Press seam allowances towards background squares; in the middle row, press the allowance between two background squares towards the row center.

  3. Sew the rows together. Press new seam allowances towards the center row.

  4. Your block should measure 15-1/2" square. Repeat to make 15 more quilt blocks.
