Clownin' Around Quilt Pattern
Clownin' Around is a quilt made with the traditional Clown quilt block. I used vibrant colors in this example, for a circus-like theme, but choose any fabrics you love (see the last page for a monochromatic quilt with sashing)Sixteen quilt blocks are arranged side-by-side in the same orientation. You can change the quilt's appearance pretty dramatically by flip-flopping some of the blocks.

Materials
Cut only enough patches to make a sample block before cutting all fabric. That's true for every quilt pattern, including mine.
Mottled Light for Background: 2-3/8 yards
- Cut (11) 4-1/4" x 42" strips; cut (88) 4-1/4" squares from strips
- Cut (19) 3-1/2" x 42" strips; cut (224) 3-1/2" squares from strips
Purple for Quarter-Square Units: 5/8 yard
- Cut (4) 4-1/4" x 42" strips; cut (32) 4-1/4" squares from strips
Rose for Quarter-Square Units: 1/2 yard
- Cut (3) 4-1/4" x 42" strips; cut (24) 4-1/4" squares from strips
Aqua for Quarter-Square Units: 5/8 yard
- Cut (4) 4-1/4" x 42" strips; cut (32) 4-1/4" squares from strips
Borders repeat the purple and aqua used in blocks, and the rose fabric is repeated in the binding. Those yardages are listed separately to make it easier for you to use different fabrics.
Inner Border: 3/4 yards for crosswise grain strip borders; 2 yards if you prefer one-piece lengthwise grain strips
Outer Border: 1-3/4 yards for crosswise strip borders; 2-1/2 yards if you prefer one-piece lengthwise strips
Binding: About 350 running inches; yardage varies depending on width (Quilt Binding Strip Instructions)
Backing: About 7-1/2 yards of traditional-width fabric sewn from 3 long panels about 32" wide; or, about 92" square of wide backing fabric (How to Make Quilt Backing)
Batting: About 92" square
