Nine Patch Quilt Block Cutting Instructions

Cutting instructions include the fabrics you'll need to add flying geese units and half square triangle units to the outer edges of nine patch blocks, shown on the next page.

Fabric B
(17) 7-1/4” x 7-1/4” squares

Fabric C
(34) 3-7/8” x 3-7/8” squares
(6) 2-1/2” strips cut from selvage to selvage

Fabric F
(40) 3-7/8” x 3-7/8” squares

Fabric G
(5) 2-1/2” strips cut from selvage to selvage

Fabric H
(3) 2-1/2” strips cut from selvage to selvage

Fabric I
(34) 3-7/8” x 3-7/8” squares

Fabric J
(28) 3-7/8” x 3-7/8” squares

  1. Sew a selvage length black Fabric C strip lengthwise to opposite sides of a green Fabric G strip of the same length (top left illustration). Press seam allowances towards the black strips.

  2. Square up one end of the strip and then cut as many 2-1/2” segments from it as possible – likely 16.

  3. Cut a 10-1/2” strip from each of two long black strips. Cut the same length from a long green Fabric G strip. Sew together to create a second (but shorter) strip set like the unit assembled in step 1. Square up one end of the strip set and cut four 2-1/2” segments from it. You should now have 20 identical segments. If your strip sets did not yield 20 segments, cut and piece together 2-1/2” squares to make up the difference.

  4. Sew the shortened green Fabric G strips lengthwise to opposite sides of a black strip of the same length. Press seam allowances towards the black strip (top middle illustration.

  5. Square up one end of the strip set and then cut ten 2-1/2” segments.

  6. Arrange two segments with black outer edges with a green-edged segment, creating three rows. Sew the rows together (top right illustration). Press seam allowances in either direction.

  7. Make a total of ten identical nine-patch units. Set aside.

  8. Sew a long black strip to opposite sides of a long brighter green Fabric H strip, just as you did to make previous strip sets. Press seam allowances towards the black strips.

  9. Square up one end of the strip set and then cut (14) 2-1/2” segments from it.

  10. Cut the remaining brighter green strips in half. Cut the remaining long black strip in half. Sew a green strip lengthwise to opposite sides of the black strip. Press seam allowances towards the black strip.

  11. Square up one end of the strip set and then cut (7) 2-1/2” segments from it.

  12. Assemble seven nine-patch units from the segments, just as you did for the previous nine patch units (brighter green units not illustrated).

  13. Pair a 3-7/8” black square with a gold Fabric I square of the same size. Use the quick pieced half-square triangle unit method to make two units from the pair, each measuring 3-1/2” x 3-1/2” when complete. Repeat to make a total of 34 identical half square triangle units (not illustrated).
