Scrap Happy Sampler Quilt Layout with Patchwork Sashing and Cornerstones
This version of the Scrap Happy Sampler Quilt layout is created by surrounding the quilt blocks with patchwork sashing and cornerstones. Because sampler and scrap quilts are all so very different from each other, components are shown in shades of gray -- I don't want to suggest colors or color values for your personal version of the quilt.Feel free to change the color values of the sashing and cornerstones -- maybe you would prefer a design that's much lighter (or darker) in some areas.
You can use this layout with any group of twelve 12" x 12" (finished size) quilt blocks.
Quilt Size: About 60" x 75" as shown (increase size by adding borders)
Fabrics & Other Materials
Yardages are somewhat generous to allow for cutting errors. Read How to Calculate Yardage for Quilts to devise your own color/value scheme.Dark fabric: 1 yard
Medium fabric: 1 yard
Light fabric: 1/4 yard
Backing: About 70" x 85" (How to Make Quilt Backing)
Binding: About 300 running inches of doublefold binding to finish at 1/4" (How to Make Quilt Binding)
Batting: About 70" x 85"
Sashing Cutting Instructions
Cut just enough to make samples before cutting all of the fabric for your quilt. The strips used for the setting are fairly narrow, so accuracy is important. If you are not accustomed to rotary cutting, be sure to read about and practice cutting fabric strips (on scraps) before you begin.
For strip pieced sashing:
- Dark: cut (10) 1-3/4" wide strips from selvage to selvage; cut (2) 1-3/4" x 12-1/2" bars; cut (5) 1" wide strips from selvage to selvage
- Medium: cut (5) 1" wide strips from selvage to selvage; cut (1) 1" x 12-1/2" bar; cut (10) 1-3/4" wide strips from selvage to selvage
For strip pieced cornerstones:
- Dark: cut (2) 1" wide strips from selvage to selvage
- Medium: cut (20) 1" x 3-1/2" bars (scraps or two 1" wide strips cut from selvage to selvage
- Light: cut (2) 1-3/4" wide strips from selvage to selvage (will actually need less than 1/4 yard -- about a 4" wide selvage to selvage strip)
OPTION to Use Individually Cut Pieces
Individual pieces are a good option for scrappy sashing, or when you don't feel comfortable working with long strip sets. Make units that mimic illustrations on the following pattern pages.Sashing
