Arrange the Quilt Blocks
You can go ahead and sew four small H units together as shown to create sixteen larger blocks, but you'll have more design flexibility if you arrange all 64 blocks on a design wall before sewing them together.Refer back to the quilt on page 1 if you like, or use the illustration here as a guide to each larger block's layout. Place the blocks on a design wall (flannel against a wall works just fine) and step back. Do you like the color balance? If not, shuffle the blocks around and look again.
Sometimes it helps to leave the room for awhile, or leave the design wall intact overnight. Look at the arrangement again. Keep shuffling blocks around until you're happy with the quilt.
Assemble the blocks in groups of four as shown on this page, pressing seam allowances towards solid bars in each group of two. Place each group back into its slot and you work on the next. When all blocks are assembled, sew the four blocks in each row together. Press and then connect the rows. Match all seam intersections carefully.
Add Borders to the Quilt
Use my straight borders instructions to measure and sew borders to the quilt. If you are a new quilter, don't be tempted to measure the quilt along its sides to determine border lengths -- your quilt won't be in-square if you do that.Cut 3-1/2" wide strips of the darker neutral to make the border.
Finish the Quilt
Mark for quilting if necessary. Sandwich with batting and backing and quilt. Square up the outer edges if necessary and bind with doublefold binding.
