Sewing an 'H' Quilt
I love these colorful H quilt blocks. They are very easy to make, especially when you use strip piecing to assemble the blocks in groups.
- The quilt finishes at about 42" x 42".
- Each small H unit finishes at 4-1/2" x 4-1/2", making four-unit quilt blocks that each measure 9" x 9".
Strip Piecing the H Quilt Blocks
You'll assemble sixteen multi-unit blocks from 64 individual H units. Yardages and cutting instructions result in four small H units from each set of fabrics; make a scrappier quilt by changing the cuts (see below). Take a look at Debby's H Quilt in the Scrap Quilts Photo Gallery. My Jigsaw Puzzle quilt pattern is assembled using H quilt blocks, too, but by following slightly different instructions that make the puzzle pieces stand out from the design.
Fabrics and Other Materials
Choose vividly colored and dark prints (tone on tones or other small prints that read as solids) for the H units (don't be afraid to throw in some warm golds and oranges) and a light neutral background for the little squares that help define the H. Choose another neutral, somewhat darker than the first, for the border and binding (neutrals help the brightly colored H units pop out).Assortment of sixteen bright and dark fabrics for H shapes:
- (1) 2" wide strip of each, cut from selvage to selvage
- (1) 2" x 8-1/2" strip of each
Light neutral fabric for H backgrounds:
- 3/8 yard
Darker neutral for border
- 1/2 yard
Quilt Binding
- About 190 running inches of doublefold binding
Quilt Backing & Batting
- About 51" x 51" of each (instructions for quilt backing and info about cotton quilt batting)
