Make an Aurora Borealis Quilt

Do not cut all patches for any quilt pattern until you have made a sample block.

This version of the Aurora Borealis Quilt is made by sewing 16 4-block units into four rows, each with four 4-block arrangements. Use the instructions on page 2 to make the 4-unit blocks.

Cutting for Quilt Blocks

Cutting instructions assume you will use the easy sandwich method to make half square triangle units. Alter patch sizes if required for another method, as described on page 2.

  • Solid Black: (128) 2-7/8" x 2-7/8" squares
  • Multicolored Fabric: (256) 2-7/8" x 2-7/8" squares
  • Bright Star Fabric: (128) 2-7/8" x 2-7/8" squares and (64) 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" squares

  1. Make 16 4-unit Aurora Borealis quilt blocks.

  2. Arrange the quilt blocks into four rows, each with four 4-block units.

  3. Sew the rows together, and then join the rows, matching seam intersections carefully for a perfect "fit." Press the quilt.

  4. Use 5-1/2" wide strips to make butted borders for the quilt. Beginners - don't be tempted to measure your quilt along its outer edges, because it is likely skewed a bit. Borders are an opportunity to square up the quilt before the finishing steps. (Border Instructions)

  5. Press the quilt.

  6. Mark the top for quilting if necessary. Sandwich with batting and backing and quilt. Finish by sewing on the binding.
