  • (4) 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" squares

Assemble Block Components

Refer to the Illustration.

  1. Use the easy sandwich method to make four half-square triangle units from the 2-7/8" lightish green and yellow squares. Each unit should measure 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" when complete.

  2. Use the quick pieced flying geese method (page 5) to make four flying geese units from the 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" lightish green rectangles and the 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" red squares.

  3. Use the quick pieced flying geese method to make four flying geese units from the black rectangles and the medium green squares.

Assemble the Quilt Block

  1. Assemble the top and bottom rows of the inner (small) star by sewing black squares to each end of two black/green geese units as shown. Press seam allowances towards the geese.

  2. Assemble the middle row of the small star by sewing the large gold square between two geese units. Press seam allowances towards the square.

  3. Sew the small star rows together, matching seams carefully. Press. The unit should measure 4-1/2" x 4-1/2".

  4. Assemble the top and bottom outer block rows by sewing half-square triangle units to each end of two deep red/green (large) geese units as shown. Press seam allowances towards the corner units.

  5. Sew a geese unit to each side of the small star to create the middle row of the large star.

  6. Sew the three rows together to complete the quilt block. The block should measure 8-1/2" x 8-1/2".
