Make a Decision and Cut Some Fabric

More Mystery Quilt Cutting

Now you need to make a decision. Do you want to try some foundation paper piecing? The next units (we haven't cut fabric yet) can be assembled with paper piecing techniques or with a quick piecing method.

You might assemble a unit or two using both techniques, just to see which you prefer.

Choose ONE Method and Cut Fabrics

Cutting for the Quick Piecing Method

  • (80) 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" black rectangles
  • (160) 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" golden yellow squares

To try ONE unit: cut only (4) 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" black rectangles and (8) 1-1/2" x 1-1/2" golden yellow squares

Cutting for the Foundation Piecing Method

It's usually a good idea to cut only a portion of the patches required for foundation piecing, because you might want to adjust sizes up or down as you sew.

(80) 1-5/8" x 2-5/8" black rectangles (80) 2-1/4" x 2-1/4" golden yellow squares; cut each square in half once diagonally

To try ONE paper pieced unit: Cut only (4) 1-5/8" x 2-5/8" black rectangles and (4) 2-1/4" x 2-1/4" golden yellow squares (cut each square in half once diagonally)
