Supplies Required: clear vinyl, permanent markers (such as Sharpies), alcohol, cloth for cleaning the vinyl

It's easy to preview machine quilting stitches by drawing designs onto a sheet of clear vinyl placed on top of the quilt. You can purchase vinyl by the yard from larger fabric and craft stores -- or use a clear shower curtain liner instead. Shower liners measure 72" x 72" and are often fairly inexpensive.

  1. Pin your quilt to a design wall (taking care to place pins all the way across the quilt top to keep it from sagging).

  2. Pin the vinyl to the wall, covering the quilt top.
