Use Painter's Tape to Machine Quilt on a Grid
Machine Quilt on a Grid

Strips of painters tape are laid next to each other with minimal space in between. Machine quilt straight lines between the strips and along the outside edges of outer strips to complete your first set of machine quilted grid lines.

Gridded machine quilting is a popular machine quilting option, and can be used as an overall quilting design or to help fill in large or small spaces on a quilt, including its borders. A grid is easy to quilt because it's made up of only straight lines -- no pesky curves to slow you down.

You can mark grid lines directly onto your quilt, but creating a grid with painter's tape makes the task much faster, and the tape will not leave a residue on your fabric. Visit any home improvement store to purchase this blue tape, which comes in a variety of widths. Your grid can be configured into squares, diamonds or cross-hatch shapes -- any straight-line design that you can imagine. Each piece of tape can be used multiple times before it begins losing its ability to stick to fabric.
