Lively Little Folk-Art Quilts, by Gwen Marston

© C&T Publishing
Lively Little Folk Art Quilts includes twenty projects, all small, and all patterns that appear to be doable in a weekend. Some of the quilts are miniature scale and some are what I'd call expanded blocks--larger than block size and filled out with elements to truly make them small quilts. Most quilts measure about 18" x 20". A few are smaller.

Quilting Projects

You'll find both pieced quilts and appliqued quilts in Lively Little Folk Art Quilts. Most applique shapes are very gentle, so even beginners will feel comfortable making the quilts. There are lots of floral patterns and several quilts with animals, including a cat, chickens, scotty dogs and a colorful bull. Pieced quilts are traditional patterns with varying color-play arrangements.

Some patterns are even suitable for young, first-time quilters.

General Instructions

General instructions include:

  • Instructions for needleturn applique
  • Lots of tips about applique in general
  • Instructions for specific shapes, such as circles, stems, curves and points
  • Instructions for reverse applique
  • Construction tips throughout the pieced patterns

The author also describes how to sew on straight borders and finish your quilts.

Overall

Lively Little Folk Art Quilts is perfect if you are looking for a small, colorful project that you'll actually finish in a hurry. These little quilts would be wonderful to give as gifts and they would look stunning hung on a wall in groups.

The instructions are easy to understand and well illustrated. If you like Folk Art, I think you'll find lots of quilt patterns to suit you.
