Make the Small Four-Patch Units

  1. Arrange the 2-1/2" segments cut from the blue and white strip-set into four pairs as shown above, flip-flopping one segment in each pair so that matching colors run along the diagonal.

  2. Sew each pair together to make 4 four-patch units. The slight loft you created on the front of the block when you pressed the seam allowance towards the blue strip will help you butt the segments together at their midpoints for a perfect fit.

  3. Press the new seam allowances in either direction.

Make the Double Four-Patch Blocks

  1. Arrange each 4-1/2" white-on-white square with a four-patch unit as shown to create two rows for the first block; the blue pathway should be on the diagonal.

  2. Sew the components of each row together and press seam allowances towards the large white squares.

  3. Sew the rows together, matching center seams and block edges.

  4. Arrange two 4-1/2" blue squares with the remaining four-patch units; the white pathway should be on the diagonal. Sew together as you did the first block.

  5. Each unfinished double four-patch block should measure 8-1/2" square.
