What is a Quarter Square Triangle Unit?

Quarter square triangle units are patchwork squares that are constructed by sewing together four equally sized triangles. The units can be assembled by either sewing triangles together individually or by using quick-piecing assembly methods.

Both of the blocks illustrated on this page contain quarter square triangle units:

  • Quarter-square triangle units form the points of the star in the star block.

    • The traditional Card Trick block, underneath the star, is made from a combination of half-square triangle units and quarter-square triangle units in different configurations.

We've used half-square triangle units to make many of the quilt blocks found in patterns on About Quilting. We'll put half-square triangle units to work again here, using them as parents for our quarter-square triangle patchwork units.
