From yquilt51: My husband's father is an avid crossword puzzle fan. I created this quilt for him on his 80th birthday. It was a challenge to do and as I progressed, it became a larger project than initially thought -- but well worth it in the end.
There was no pattern, just the combined efforts of my husband and myself. There are 100 letters and 24 names. Each letter is a 3 1/4" square, with 1/4" black fabric between each letter, just like the black lines in a crossword puzzle. Each letter is paper-pieced with some letters having up to 18 pieces of fabric per letter.
The size was trial and error (to come up with the correct size without making the quilt too large). The entire quilt is 58" x 72". To this day, my father-in-law admires his quilt and it is used often.
