Joy's Dream Coat - cotton fabrics, cotton batting, machine quilted

Shout4joy
Everyone has that smallest bit of hope, of faith, that one day they will open their eyes and it will come true

From Shout4Joy: After reading the quote I kept seeing colors, the colors that delighted me as a child – purples, pinks and blues. I knew that I had to work with these colors in my piece as I still count them as my favorites. I thought of where dreams go as we grow up. I know that they morph into other things and no longer look the same as they do in childhood. I needed to incorporate that into my piece as well. And then I decided I wanted to wear it, as I wore my dreams as a child through dress up and make believe.

I proceeded to piece my front and my back and chose to work from the blooming nine patch. I wanted the quilt to radiate from the light colors (hope, but not much substance) to brighter colors (hope, with promise of bright days) and then to the deeper, richer colors (the reality of life, richness, but not all full of light). I chose to use the Carefree Nine Patch block to also emphasize the fact that dreams change.

I quilted the pieced with an all over flower and leaf pattern. It shows growth, but also links the dreams of little girl-hood to my grown up womanhood.

The jacket pattern is a McCall's pattern that I adapted to fit my body and my piece.
