Paper Pieced Miniature Quilt Pattern
This paper pieced miniature quilt finishes at 21-inches square and is made with sixteen 3-inch square traditional Whirlwind blocks. The whirl in each quilt block is a different print, but they all share the same background fabric, which helps tie the prints together. (Make the background scrappy if you prefer; try to choose fabrics with similar color values.)
Quilt Borders
A 1-1/2" inner border surrounds the four rows of blocks and a 3" border follows to frame the entire quilt.
Before You Make the Quilt
If you are not familiar with foundation paper piecing, read Foundation Piecing Basics and Paper Piecing Tips before you begin to get a basic understanding of the process and to determine if you will use permanent or temporary foundations -- either works fine for for this quilt pattern.Print the templates in the Scrappy Whirlwinds PDF file onto your foundation material (paper, other). I've doubled-up templates, but you'll need to print eight copies. Eight blocks are mirror images of the primary design; trace a mirror image copy of the templates.
Cut enough fabric for a block or two and make adjustments to patch size if necessary as you sew -- important for any foundation pieced pattern.
