Sashing Cutting Instructions
  • Cut one 6-1/2" strip from selvage to selvage. Square up one end of the strip and cut (24) 1-3/4" segments from it. If the strip produces only (23), cut a 1-3/4" x 6-1/2" bar from remaining yardage.

Cornerstone Cutting Instructions

  • Cut a 1-3/4" x 16-1/2" strip. Square up one end of the strip and cut (9) 1-3/4" x 1-3/4" squares.

Assemble the Horizontal Sashing

  1. Sew four sashing strips into a horizontal row, separating them with three cornerstones as shown. Press seam allowances towards the sashing strips.
  2. Make two more identical units.

Assemble the Quilt Top

  1. Arrange quilt blocks into four horizontal rows, each row with four blocks. Separate the rows with horizontal sashing units.
  2. Place a sashing strip between blocks in each row.
  3. Step back and look at the design. Switch blocks around to balance colors until you're satisfied with the layout.
  4. Sew sashing between quilt blocks to assemble each row, carefully matching ends and midpoints of sashing with ends of midpoints of blocks. Press seam allowances towards the sashing.
  5. Assemble the quilt top, sewing horizontal sashing rows between rows of blocks. Match seam intersections carefully. Press.

Add Borders and Finish the Quilt

  1. Sew an inner border to the quilt using 1-3/4" wide strips of the sashing fabric. Use 4" wide strips to sew the outer border.

If you are a new quilter, don't be tempted to make borders that match the measurements along the sides of your quilt, because they are likely out of square. Read the instructions before you begin.

  2. Mark for quilting if necessary. Sandwich the quilt with batting and backing. Quilt by hand or machine. Trim and square-up excess edges and sew binding strips around the quilt edges.
