Design the Quilt Blocks
The double nine-patch quilt blocks are assembled as shown in the illustration, with five pieced units arranged in an "X" configuration and four 5" squares separating them. You can sew blocks together one-by-one without regard to placement, but you might prefer to arrange the components on a table or design wall and shift pieces around until you're happy with the look.
- Referring to the illustration on page 1 or page 6, arrange your setting squares on point in two rows. Keep your setting triangles handy. Note that the page 6 drawing has identical blocks throughout.
- Design your first quilt block by placing five small nine-patch blocks on point in an "X" arrangement; place four plain squares in remaining positions.
- Lay out the remaining eight double nine-patch blocks, placing setting squares and triangles next to blocks as shown.
- Step back and examine the layout. Shift components around until you're happy with the layout.
- Sew each block together as shown on this page, creating three rows first and then joining rows. You can trim seam allowances as before if bulk is an issue.
