Strip lengths are approximate and may vary slightly depending on the length of your yardage.
19 Variation One Blocks
- Sew a dark 9" strip lengthwise to each side of a medium 9" strip.
- Use sharp scissors or your rotary equipment to trim each seam allowance slightly, leaving a little more than 1/8". The goal is to reduce bulk/overlap when allowances are pressed.
- Press seam allowances towards the medium strip.
- Square up one end of the strip set and cut eight 1" segments from it.
- Repeat to make four more strip sets in this configuration. Cut 38 segments and set aside.
- Sew a medium 9" strip lengthwise to each side of a light 9" strip. Trim seam allowances and press away from the center.
- Square up the strip set and cut eight 1" segments from it. Make two more strip sets and cut a total of 19 segments.
26 Variation Two Blocks
- Sew a dark 9" strip lengthwise to a medium 9" strip. Trim seam allowances and press towards dark strips.
- Square up one end of the strip set and cut eight 1" segments from it.
- Make more sets in the same configuration (not necessarily the same colors) and cut a total of (52) 1" segments. Set aside.
- Use remaining strips to make more strip sets, but reverse values and put the dark strips at the center. Trim seam allowances and press towards the dark strip. Cut 26 1" segments.
Assemble Quilt Blocks
- Assemble Variation One blocks by sewing segments with dark corners to each side of a segment with a light center. Trim seam allowances and press. Make 19 Variation One blocks.
- Assemble Variation Two blocks by sewing segments with dark corners to each side of a segment with a dark center. Trim seam allowances and press. Make 26 Variation Two blocks.
It's fine if your blocks vary in color or layout.
