The small units can be assembled in any way you like -- two color value variations are shown here. Variation One contains three colors, one at block corners, another between corners, and a third (light) is used in the center.
Variation Two is made with two colors. One forms an X in the block and the other fills in. Another common variation reverses this two-color layout, putting the lighter fabric in the "X" and filling in with the darker.
You do not have to use identical small units within each double nine-patch block and the layouts you choose probably won't match mine. The blocks will look wonderful if you approach the design from a free-hand, scrappy perspective.
Cutting
Strips for Small UnitsThese cuts will make 19 Variation One blocks and 26 Variation Two blocks. Use value as a guide, but fabrics can be the same or scrappy.
Make cuts on the lengthwise grain of your 1/4 yards, ABOUT 9" long. You can use more, but shorter, strips for a scrappier quilt. 19 Variation One Blocks
Darks: (10) 1" x 9" strips
Mediums: (8) 1" x 9" strips
Lights: (3) 1" x 9" strips
26 Variation Two Blocks
Darks: (18) 1" x 9" strips
Mediums: (15) 1" x 9" strips
Filler Squares
Cut (36) 5" x 5" squares to use between small nine-patch units. My illustration shows 16 in blue and 20 in rust. Choose different fabrics than you plan to use in small units and for setting squares and triangles.
