This easy patchwork wallhanging pattern has a center block that's a variation of the traditional Bear's Paw design.

I've included a few ideas to help you use the pattern to create a coordinating table runner and placemats.

The original 30" square quilt can be used as a wallhanging or a table throw, and its components can be altered just a bit to create the other pieces.

Remember that you can change the quilt's theme entirely by choosing different fabrics -- make a Thanksgiving set or stitch it to "match" another season or event.

Quilting Fabrics & Other Materials for Wallhanging

Read all instructions before cutting fabric. Patch sizes are listed individually.

Red print for block triangles and block center: (8) 2-7/8" x 2-7/8" squares; (1) 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" square

Dark, multicolor print for squares that sit next to triangles in block: (12) 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" squares

Medium green print for block and for inner border/sash: (4) 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" squares; (4) 4-1/2" x 14-1/2" bars

Light green print for block sashing and for border/sash cornerstones: (8) 4-1/2" x 4-1/2" squares; (4) 4-1/2" x 6-1/2" bars

Light neutral print for block background and for border cornerstones: (4) 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" squares; (8) 2-7/8" x 2-7/8" squares; (4) 4-1/2" x 4-1/2" squares

Dark green print for outer borders/sash and border cornerstones: (4) 4-1/2" x 4-1/2" squares; (4) 4-1/2" x 14-1/2" bars

Backing: 1-1/8 yard

Batting: about 38" x 38" of thin batting

Binding: about 140 running inches of doublefold binding

Make the Quilt Block for My Easy Wallhanging

Use my quick pieced half square triangle unit instructions to pair a neutral 2-7/8" x 2-7/8" square with a red square of the same size. When complete, you will have two red/neutral half square triangle units that measure 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" each.
Repeat, pairing all remaining red and neutral squares of that size to make a total of (16) identical half square triangle units.
Refer to the illustration, upper left. Arrange (1) 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" neutral square with (2) half square triangles to create the top row; one half square triangle unit and (2) 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" dark, multicolor squares to form row 2; one half square triangle unit, one 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" dark squares and one 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" medium green square to form row 3.

Sew components of each row together. Press seam allowances in adjoining rows in opposite directions and then sew the rows together. Press. The unit should measure 6-1/2" x 6-1/2".
Make three more identical 6-1/2" x 6-1/2" for block corners.
Arrange two block corners as shown, illustration's center. Place a 2-1/2" x 6-1/2" light green bar between them vertically. Sew the three pieces together, pressing the seam allowances towards the green bars.
Repeat to make a second identical unit.
Sew a 2-1/2" x 6-1/2" light green bar to opposite sides of a 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" red square. Press seam allowances towards the square.
Sew the new bar unit horizontally between the block halves. Press. The quilt block should measure 14-1/2" x 14-1/2".

Sew a 4-1/2" x 14-1/2" dark green bar lengthwise to a light green bar of the same size. Press seam allowance towards the darker bar. Repeat, making three more identical units.
Gather four 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" squares: two light green, one neutral and one dark green. Referring to the illustration, top right, sew the squares together to create a four patch unit. Sew a light green to a dark green for the top row; a neutral to a light green for the bottom row.

Press seam allowances towards the bottom row. Make three more four-patch units.
Sew a medium green/dark green bar unit to the top of the block. Sew another to the bottom of the block. Medium green bars should touch the block. Press seam allowances away from the quilt block.
Sew four-patch units to the ends of remaining medium green/dark green bars, arranging them as illustrated. Press seam allowances towards the long bar units.
Sew the side bar units to the center block/bar unit. Press.
Mark the top for quilting if necessary. Sandwich with batting and backing and quilt. Finish by applying the binding.

How to Make a Coordinating Table Runner

Make a table runner from multiple quilt blocks separated by a sashing and cornerstones.

Determine how long you want the table runner to be. Each quilt block adds 14" to the runner's length, and each sashing/cornerstone unit adds 4". Sashing/cornerstone units are placed between each block and at the front and end of the row.

The example shown would finish at 22" x 94". Add or subtract blocks or separators to adjust its length. You could opt to sew a more narrow sashing between blocks. Adjust square size to match the (unfinished) width of sashing.

For each sashing/cornerstone unit, cut one 4-1/2" x 14-1/2" bar and two 4-1/2" x 4-1/2" squares.
Refer back to page 2 for block patch sizes. Make as many blocks as desired.
Sew components together. Press seam allowances towards the sashing/cornerstone units. Add backing and thin batting (flannel is fine, but batting could also be eliminated) and quilt as desired. Bind with doublefold binding.

Placemats can be adapted to the required size by altering the elements that surround the center block. And if the center block is too fussy for you, replace it with a 14-1/2" x 14-1/2" square of quilting fabric.

Refer back to page 2 for the patches required to make the quilt block. To make the example on the right, sew a 4-1/2" x 14-1/2" bar to each side of the block (reduce the outer strip widths if you would like a smaller mat).

Finish as you would any other project.

To make the example on the right, create side bar units from two each 4-1/2" x 14-1/2" dark green bars and two medium green bars of the same side. Sew them to the sides of the block.

Make a top row from two 4-1/2" x 4-1/2" neutral squares, two 4-1/2" x 4-1/2" light green squares and a medium green bar that measures 4-1/2" x 14-1/2". Assemble as shown and sew to the center unit. Make another horizontal sash/cornerstone unit for the bottom. Finish as desired.
