Sew Strips Between Vertical Panels

Janet Wickell

Finish the Windows Quilt

  1. Measure each panel vertically through its midpoint. It isn't unusual for dimensions to differ slightly, but you want them to be as close as possible so that blocks align side to side after sashing strips are sewn between columns. (Having foundations in place helps keep the sizes consistent.)

  2. If lengths differ, press the columns to make them match as closely as possible.

  3. Add the three strip lengths together and divide by three. Cut two black strips that length and 2-1/2" wide. Sew them between columns as described in my Straight Border Basics. Press seam allowances towards the black strips.

  4. Use the same border instructions to sew a black border around the quilt top, using 4-1/2" wide strips.

  5. Remove temporary foundations.

  6. Mark the quilt for quilting if necessary. Sandwich with batting and backing and machine quilt.

  7. Bind the quilt with doublefold mitered binding.
