Make Foundation Templates and Prepare Fabrics

Foundation template and finished quilt block (block looks slightly smaller because the drawing doesn't represent a seam around the outer perimeter).

If foundation piecing is a new technique for you, read Foundation Piecing Basics before you begin.

The illustration gives you a look at the foundation template and the finished block. The block is assembled on the reverse side of the foundation, so it's a mirror image of the template. In some cases that's very important, but it doesn't really matter for this quilt, because the end design is symmetrical in appearance.

Use my PDF file to make 12 permanent or temporary foundation templates (I would probably use a temporary foundation, vellum or another material that runs easily through a printer). Be sure to print the file at 100% (do not enlarge or reduce). Measure the image after printing to make sure it is 6-1/2" x 6-1/2".

Color-code your foundations to create a fabric placement guide.

Cut Fabric Strips

You can work with long strips and cut the "tails" off of them after piecing. Pre-cut them to about 1/2" longer than the strips you're piecing if that is easier for you.

Use the following widths to begin with, cutting just one strip of each until you're sure the widths work for you.

Black: Use 2-3/4" to 3" squares (patch 1)

Ivory: 1" wide (patches 2, 3, 6 and 7)

Green: 1-1/4" wide (patches 4 and 5)

Rust: 2-1/2" wide (patches 8 and 9(
