Pink Ribbon Quilting Tools

Quilting Tools that Help Support Breast Cancer Awareness

By , About.com Guide

Most of us -- men and women -- have been affected in some way by breast cancer. Too many have lost a mother, a grandmother, a sister (like me), daughters and other female and male family members, along with best friends. But we hear more success stories now, and they seem to be growing in number every year. I believe quilters are part of the reason for many of the successes, because we've helped promote awareness and early detection of breast cancer.

Manufacturers have introduced lots of pink ribbon themed quilting tools and supplies in the past several years. This list covers a few that would be a helpful addition to any quilter's toolbox.

Pin Ribbon from EZ Acrylic Templates

EZ Acrylics Ribbon Template

EZ's ribbon template measures about 4" x 5" and is a reliable tool to grab when you want to create an applique quilt or other applique project. Templates are made from sturdy acrylic, so they can be used over and over again for many years without worrying about distorting their edges during a series of tracings. Make your ribbons pink for breast cancer awareness, or choose a different awareness ribbon color to show your support for another disease.

Traveling Quickie Cutter

Traveling Quickie Cutter

This cute little cutter has an alligator clip on its back so that you can easily attach it to your clothing or another secure location. Take the cutter off when you go through a metal detector, but the it will pass airport security. It's sharp enough to cut through tough yarns, so threads should be a breeze to snip. The cutter is available in multiple colors and styles, so pull up the variations if necessary to see the pink ribbon version.

Pink Safety Pins

Singer offers this pack of 25 pink safety pins. I'm not sure how they'll work for pin basting a quilt, but we all need to have some extra pins around the house. And they might just work with our Family Craft Guide's Pink Ribbon Beaded Safety Pin project.

Olfa Blades in Pink Carrying Case

Olfa Rotary Blades in Pink Carrying Case

Olfa offers this limited edition set of five 45mm replacement blades for your rotary cutter. They're stored in a pink case -- you can keep using the case by (very carefully) transferring new purchases into it after the blades are dull. The blades were 40-percent off the day I looked, and that probably means they're on the way out.

Pink Ribbon Band-Aids

Pink Ribbon Band-Aids

They're not technically a quilting supply, but most of us get little nicks and cuts when we sew. You might be able to find these locally -- I haven't seen them, but my area is notorious for being the last place in the U.S. to acquire products that the rest of the country has had forever. I'm still unhappy that we can't buy pumpkin-spiced Hershey's Kisses.

More Pink Ribbon Quilting Tools

You'll find many other breast cancer awareness tools for sale, but some are limited editions, so pick them up while you can. Olfa offered a pink rotary cutter for awhile, and sometimes they show up for sale on ebay.

Numerous types of pink ribbon fabrics are always available, although like other fabric lines, designs change from season to season. I like Gail Cadden's pink ribbon designs, but you'll find many others. Windham Fabric's Fight Like a Girl line is one, and Print Concepts has (at this time) a pink ribbon batik fabric collection by Karen Combs. You'll find more collections when you browse the Web or pop into your local quilt shop.
