Unconventional Quilting Tool Finds: Tapes

Some of our Quilting Forum members have been sharing their favorite "found" tools -- things that weren't made for quilting, but adapt wonderfully for our needs.

Here are some of their creative uses for tape.

From Karen in central California:

  • I use medical tape on the backs of my rulers to keep them from slipping -- the current brand I have is Nexcare Flexible Clear Tape, 3/4 inch wide. It says it's stretchable and breathable.

It's made by 3M and is a "Transpore Surgical Tape." You can see the texture on it. One ruler I have it on was done about 10 years ago and I haven't had to change it. I think a roll of tape is about $3-4 and will do several rulers. I put it on my shape-cut rulers also, like triangles, etc.

From JOY:

  • I use blue painter's tape for marking the 1/4" on my sewing machine bed, for marking lines on my rotary rulers, for holding down that funny thing for making HSTs (the one Pam Bono markets).

(I think Joy might be talking about the Angler 2 -Janet)

From Chris B:

  • I also use blue painter's tape. I wrap it around my fingers backwards (sticky side out) to pull the needle while hand quilting.

  • Buy a package of post-it notes -- they make great seam guides. "Tape" a stack on the measurement you are sewing. Viola... perfect seams!

From Lucy:

  • Snippets of blue painter's tape can make appliqu go more smoothly than little pins that sometimes catch.

From Sewingupastorm:

  • I used the blue painter's tape recently when I made a Crown Royal projet. I put the tape on the underside of the ruler so I could line up the words exactly on each piece -- you could do that for kaleidoscope quilts as well.

From Bert in WA

  • Wide shipping tape -- wrap it around your foot, sticky side out, to pick up thread litter in the carpet. I've also put a piece sticky side out onto my jeans so when I am pressing blocks/tops I can grab loose threads and have someplace to stick them. Just remember to remove it when you are leaving the sewing room, LOL.

From Sophie:

  • I use masking tape for marking straight lines for quilting. It's reuseable.
