English Paper Piecing

When you make a quilt using English paper piecing, you'll cut a paper shape for every patch in the quilt. Next, you'll wrap a piece of fabric around each patch and hand baste the patch edges to the paper. To finish piecing you must hand sew all patches together along their edges before removing the papers.
English Paper Piecing History & Instructions
The Illinois State Museum offers basic instructions for English Paper Piecing, along with a few illustrations to help you visualize how it's done.
English Paper Piecing
This is kind of interesting. It's a glossary definition from the State Museum of Pennsylvania, but what's cool is the photo shown to illustrate the definition--the back side of a vintage Grandmother's Flower Garden with papers still intact.
